So obviously the Needtobreathe guys aren’t strangers to the Indianapolis live music scene – this is now the second Indianapolis show of theirs that we’ve covered (see our previous review of their show at The Vogue *here*), but they made a stop in our great city at least one other time in 2010. 3 stops in Indy in one year – it’s *extremely* rare for national recording artists to do this, and I think it speaks volumes about their loyalty to supportive fans, and their desire to include Indianapolis folks in their rapidly-expanding fan base. Oh and by the way - they’ll be touring with Taylor Swift in 2011, with a late July date scheduled in Indianapolis. I probably don’t have to tell you how huge this is for them! Moral of this story is to go see Needtobreathe live whenever you have the chance!
But back to the topic at hand…prior to the opening band, The Daylights, taking the stage, some of the Needtobreathe crew showed up on stage with poster boards telling the audience to turn their backs during The Daylights first song as an end-of-tour prank. There must have been a snitch in the audience, because when The Daylights came out, they performed their first song with their backs to the crowd as well – pretty funny moment. You can tell these guys had a great time touring together. The Daylights are a three-man band from Southern California who just put out a new full-legnth, self-titled album in September of 2010. They played quite a few songs, including “Rogue Machine”, “Outsider”, and a song titled “I Hope This Gets to You”, written for a friend trying to get it to his girlfriend by means of viral video. Pretty interesting and fun concept for a song!
After a brief pause between sets, the stage curtains opened and out billowed those well-known clouds of fabricated concert fog creating a very dramatic atmosphere for Needtobreathe’s entrance. The anticipation from the young crowd was palpable in the air. The guys opened their set with “Prisoner” – the perfect song to let the crowd release some of that pent up excitement by singing and jumping around. Everyone was all pumped for the rest of their set after that, which included “More Time”, “Stones Under Rushing Water”, “Girl Named Tennessee”, and one of their most popular songs, “Something Beautiful”. While being right up at the front of the stage was nice, we stepped to the back after a few songs just to take it all in. Needtobreathe has a pretty cool stage setup including a backdrop incorporating a ton of tiny LED’s that can even create images of galloping horses behind the band. Needtobreathe is a fantastic Southern/Christian-influenced rock band, and I think their level of stardom is finally going to start reflecting their level of talent. Go see these guys when you get the opportunity – I think they’ll soon be the headliners instead of the opening act on their own amphitheater tour – they certainly do deserve it!
