Alright, I’ll admit that although Melissa Ferrick has been on the music scene for years, I came into this show completely unaware of what to expect. I’m honestly not sure I had ever heard even one song of Ferrick’s, which I now know to have been a grievous mistake on my part! Better late than never, right?
Even if you aren’t impressed by anything else that involves Melissa Ferrick as an established and accomplished musician, you have to be fascinated by her skills on the old 6-string. She has complete command over her guitar – I caught myself getting so caught up in her guitar playing that I forgot to listen to her lyrics a few times (her songwriting kicks ass too, in case you were wondering!). The Irving was the perfect setting for our first (of what will probably be many) Melissa Ferrick shows – a raw, stripped-down, no-frills venue for an artist of similar repute.
I’m sure this is old news to those lucky long-time Melissa Ferrick fans, but the highlight of the night for me was “Drive”. I’m so very glad that my first exposure to this song was in a live setting – it was hilarious, and awkward, and voyeuristic, and relatable all at the same time. And…now that inappropriate-for-work song will be spinning itself on repeat in my head while I try to work on spreadsheets all day. Score!
Melissa Ferrick has a new album coming out in the Spring - she played quite a few songs off of it, and it sounds like it'll be pretty great. I know I'll pick it up, and continue my Ferrick education!
