The first time we saw Edie Carey live was on the 2010 Cayamo Cruise, where we were charmed by her smooth vocal ability, refreshing songwriting, and her instant friendliness. We loved hearing the stories and adventures behind her songs and discovering how it all translated musically. So when we heard that she was coming to the historic Irving Theater in Indy, we knew we had to go.
Eva Hunter opened the show, introducing us to a selection of songs that had as much soul as the old walls and stage of the Irving Theater. Eva released her newest album in April, entitled “Thirsty.” She started off with “Prized Possession,” a sultry tune full of lyrics packed with meaningful and passionate words. Again, I think one of the things that we really enjoy about artists coming out of the singer/songwriter genre is hearing the stories behind the songs. Eva has great stories to tell and is truly a warm person. She played 4 more songs from “Thirsty,” including “Crazy Moon Ride,” which was my favorite she played during the evening. If you are looking for an artist full of potential who mixes singer/songwriter with some soul, please check out Eva’s music and you will be delightfully surprised.
First of all, let me just take a moment and talk about Robin from segmentofsociety.com…she is fantastic and one of the sweetest people you will ever meet. We love the fact that there are so many people in Indy who are devoted to bringing great musical talent here and building up our great city as a place to find stellar music. Robin is one of those people, so if you want a great place to find out about upcoming shows, go check out Segment of Society.
Edie Carey then took the stage and opened her show with a song called “With You Now,” a track from her newest album, “Bring the Sea.” As I previously mentioned, Edie’s voice is as smooth as they come. It is comforting and emotionally moving all at the same time. I’m really dragging an old and perhaps obscure reference out here, but if you liked country artist Cyndi Thomson, you will love Edie’s music and voice. Throughout her set, Edie shared the stories behind her songs and the making of her new album. One of my favorite stories she shared was the story behind “Red Shoes.” Edie ran into someone she knew from her childhood and instantly recognized how different life has turned out for two people who grew up so close together: her friend was loading children in a vehicle in the hurried-mom fashion, and Edie was loading musical gear into her car for her next gig. My personal favorite song of the night was “Easy Now,” an upbeat song that gets instantly stuck in your head and is lovely to sing along to.
The evening was really a great celebration of Edie’s new album and she went on to sing tracks “Something Out of Nothing,” “Come Inside,” and “Waiting.” I have to say that what I love about Edie’s music is the genuine thoughtfulness of her words and vocal performance on each song. She is an artist that strives to find that perfect phrase and cadence in her songs and I believe she accomplishes this beautifully. And as much as I was blown away by her acoustic performance on this evening at the Irving, I have found that I equally love the full production and arrangement of songs on “Bring the Sea.” Edie is one of my favorite artists and I am so excited to see what happens for her career as a result of her new album. If you haven’t checked it out already, go get it now!
