We’ve seen Green River Ordinance (hereafter referred to as GRO) in a few different settings (huge outdoor music festival, opening for The Elms at The Vogue), but this Radio Radio show was quite a different experience. First, let’s talk about Miggs who opened for GRO. They are a decent rock band – I think the crowd was too low-key for their liking and was hanging back from the stage and stayed seated for their set. The most memorable song in their set was their single “Girls and Boys”, which they made a music video for and you can watch here: www.miggsmusic.com
GRO is no stranger to the Indianapolis live music scene – they’ve opened for The Elms at The Vogue, opened for David Cook at the Murat, and actually had previously played a gig at Radio Radio in February 2010. Props to them for continually coming back to reach out to Indianapolis fans – what better way to build an extremely loyal fan base as a band is on its way up? And yes, I do think this is a band that is on their way to bigger and better things – a sentiment I think that most of the young, respectful crowd at Radio Radio that night would have to agree upon.
GRO kicked off their set with some of their best material, including “Out of My Hands” – a touching song about having no choice but to break someone’s heart after a relationship has changed. Also memorable from the first half of the set were “Goodbye LA” and “Getting Older”. This tour was dubbed the “Put on Your Dancing Shoes” tour, so sometime after the band played “Dancing Shoes”, it was time to crown the winner of this evening’s lovely prize – none other than a pair of dancing shoes. Contests like that always seem like a fun way to keep people interested in the band.
A cover of Fleetwood Mac’s “Go Your Own Way” was next on the docket, and just a couple of songs later, GRO mentioned the countless requests they’ve had for songs to be dedicated to someone, and how they had a marriage proposal at a show. They then mentioned that a guy (who didn’t appear to have attended the concert) had dedicated the song “Endlessly” – for which lead singer Josh Jenkins takes a seat to “tickle the ivories” – to a girl standing very close to the front of the stage. She looked incredibly shocked, by the way, so congratulations dude, whoever you are – I’m pretty sure she’ll never forget that moment. The end of the regularly-scheduled programming was “Come On”, the single from the band’s latest album “Out of My Hands”. Certainly a catchy, upbeat song that’ll get stuck in your head for days!
There was, of course, an encore – the most memorable part of which was the band all stepping off the stage into the center of the dance floor as everyone in the audience crowded around to listen to GRO do a completely unplugged version of their song “Where the West Wind Blows”. So great to experience things like this while these bands are still relatively small enough to pull things like that off. There isn’t much that beats experiencing great music in such an intimate setting.
