We finally got to see Will Hoge perform live! You may remember we interviewed Will last November Indy Live Music's Will Hoge Interview, but things didn’t work out for us to review when he opened for Shinedown that fall. Almost a year later, he stopped back by Indianapolis to headline at Radio Radio and we got the chance to experience his music up close and personal.
It’s been said that Hoge seems to channel Bruce Springsteen in his music – well, tonight, he even looked like Bruce! Curly, longer hair, wearing the jeans and jacket with a hood…very Springsteen-esque. Will is touring in support of his latest album, Number Seven. One of my favorites from this new album is the single “When I Get My Wings”. This one’s a real heartbreaker – about an older guy losing his wife, and counting down the days until he’ll be with her in again in heaven. Hoge also entertained the crowd with other fantastic new songs from Number Seven, such as “Fools Gonna Fly”, “Too Old to Die Young”, and “Silver Chain”.
Will Hoge certainly didn’t skip over his tried-and-true material to promote the new album. He played “Goodnight/Goodbye”, and my all-time Will Hoge favorite – “Even if it Breaks Your Heart”, both from the album “The Wreckage”. And Will’s song “Baby Girl”, a sweet song from a father to a baby daughter with lines like “And I hope that when you’re ready, you get one never ending kiss”, has the potential to bring a tear to the eye of any parent in the crowd. Hoge has a great presence on stage, and seemed to captivate the audience from beginning to end. Go see him live when you get the chance, and check out his music here.
Opening the show, Locklsey, was a super-high energy band. Probably most known for their song “The Whip”, which I’ve heard a ton of times on an American Family Insurance commercial, these guys shook the stage to the point that I was worried about their safety, but they had a great time rocking out. Locksley has been named a band to watch, and I’ll echo that sentiment. I think these guys have what it takes to make it big.
