We were pretty thrilled when The Weepies announced that they would be making a stop here in Indy during their recent tour. They have been busy selling out shows all over the country in some pretty awesome venues, so we were happily surprised to see them play our favorite “little” venue at Radio Radio.
Perhaps even more exciting was the fact that Matt the Electrician was announced as the opener. We had the opportunity to see Matt play a very intimate show at Lazy Daze coffeehouse a few months ago. We fell in love with his music and also the fact that he is genuinely one of the nicest people you will ever meet. He played an excellent set, including songs “Accidental Crimes,” and “Osaka In The Rain.” He brought out what he has dubbed the “pukeulele” and played the song he wrote about his son called “Animal Boy,” which is my favorite song by Matt. He took the time to tell us some stories about touring over in Europe, what his son Arlo was going to be for Halloween (which was a ninja/wizard), and told us the great story behind his song “For Angela.” What I really love about Matt’s music, especially seeing him live, is that he has such great stories to tell through his songs. Another one of my favorites by Matt is a song called “Got Your Back,” which is currently being featured on commercials for Eddie Bauer. What was so great about Matt’s performance on this night was that he isn’t a flashy performer by any means, but he did a perfect job of getting the crowd ready for the Weepies. Everyone listened, was interested, and appreciated his stories and music. I loved it. Please check out his music and if Matt is coming to your town, go see him because you will love the stories he has to tell.
Next up came the Weepies, who have been getting a lot of well-deserved attention as of late. Their newest album, “Be My Thrill” has consistently done well since the release in late August. Deb and Steve opened with a simple version of “Please Speak Well of Me.” The crowd was very warm and excited to see them. Of course, I think people appreciate seeing a genuine connection between two people, and it is evident that Steve Tannen and Deb Talan are much more than just husband and wife, father and mother; they are two artists that have combined their musical ability to connect with so many people through the undertones of deep and sometimes dark lyrics, with the upbeat feel of Indie folk music. They played a deep set of 18 songs, including “I Was Made For Sunny Days,” “Orbiting,” “Painting by Chagall,” “Be My Thrill,” and “Love Doesn’t Last.” It was so great to see the connection between the Weepies and the crowd. I think that despite the fact that they have been selling out shows in huge venues throughout this tour, they still appreciate being able to play in smaller places and being close to the people that sing along to their music. The Weepies were thrilled to be playing their music for us and we were thrilled to listen. If you haven’t checked out their music already, then you need to and I promise, you will be pleasantly surprised.
