I have a strong recollection of playing my “Everything” tape (yes, tape) by The Bangles until I probably wore it out at 8 years old. Yes, that’s the album with their #1 hit “Eternal Flame” on it, but I remember being a much bigger fan of “In Your Room”. So much more upbeat…and probably inappropriate for an 8 year old to be rocking out to. My 8-year-old self was pretty excited to hear that The Bangles, who I didn’t even know were back together, were making an appearance in Indy on their tour in support of their latest album, “Sweetheart of the Sun”.
After all these years and some friction within the band, The Bangles really brought their A-game to The Egyptian Room in Indianapolis. These three ladies sure can rock out! While they were out touring in support of their latest album, they also couldn’t resist playing the old standards, like “Manic Monday”, “If She Knew What She Wants”, “He’s Got a Secret”, and to close out the night, the very fitting “Walk Like an Egyptian”. I also really enjoyed the selections from their album “Sweetheart of the Sun” which just dropped on September 27th. The rock anthem “Ball and Chain” was probably my favorite of their new material, but I also really enjoyed “I’ll Never be Through with You”, “Anna Lee” and “Under a Cloud”.
One of the most entertaining things about going to see bands I loved when I was younger is watching how many people my age and slightly older bring their kids out to see these bands that meant so much to them 20 years ago. There were quite a few elementary-age kids wearing their parents old Bangles t-shirts, and standing with their parents right up front to get the best view they could. One girl even spent most of the evening dancing to tunes like “Manic Monday” with her mom – priceless!
Local Indy all-female group Neon Love Life opened for The Bangles. I was thrilled to finally get to see what this group is all about after reading and hearing about them for so long! They are a great group with some fantastic energy. I thoroughly enjoyed their sound, and plan to try and catch them again soon to get a better taste of what they’re all about.
