I absolutely love the feel of Radio Radio when it’s set up as a listening room, so I was thrilled when we encountered this setup for the Tyrone Wells show. A few rows of folding chairs close to the stage, backed by the high-top tables and bar stools made this feel like a very intimate show with friends. This also lent itself to a very respectful audience, which was most likely Tyrone’s goal in arranging the seating in this configuration.
Englishman Nick Howard opened the evening with some really fantastic displays of both musical ability and creative songwriting. His style is so similar to Tyrone Wells – he really was a perfect warm-up for the night of music to follow. “Falling For You” – the first single off his new album, was a great tune. And how can you not like a guy who, in the middle of singing his own song, breaks into a cover of “Breakeven” by The Script, followed by a little of Lady Gaga’s “Poker Face”? Great entertainment value!
Tyrone Wells opened up with one of my favorite songs that he’s penned – “Running Around in my Dreams”. If you haven’t heard it, beware – it’ll get stuck in your head in no time. Wells played a good sampling of his songs, old and new, including “Need” from his album Hold On, “Remain”, from the album with the same name, and the aforementioned “Running Around in My Dreams” from Metal and Wood. He even broke out a new track or two, including “Don’t Be Afraid”, which will be part of a new album he’s working on to be released in early 2012. Wells even covered Bill Withers 70’s classic “Ain’t No Sunshine”, which was a definite crowd pleaser.
Tyrone Wells could easily be someone you hear in regular rotation on your favorite radio station sometime soon. His sound is that perfect blend of folk/pop/rock that’s easy on the ears, and lyrics that are completely relatable. His songs have been featured in too many television shows to count. Grab a copy of one of his albums when you have the chance and see where his music takes you – I bet you’ll enjoy the ride!
