Talk about a rock show – the Carnival of Madness tour featuring headliner Theory of a Deadman, also with Alter Bridge, Black Stone Cherry, Adelitas Way, and Emphatic was one heck of a good time. Moving this show from The Lawn to The Murat Theater seemed to be an interesting choice at first (I mean, an alt-rock show in a pretty theatre?), but it worked out perfectly in the end.
We unfortunately missed catching Emphatic, but the first act we did see, Adelitas Way, sure brought rock to that theatre. They played some great songs, including “White Knuckles”, “Ghost of Days Gone By”, and “Isolation”. This young band has some great momentum and potential – keep an eye out for them!
Black Stone Cherry was up next, and kept the energy levels high, even though the crowd was probably smaller than desired. Everyone rocked out to tunes like “Blind Man”, “White Trash Millionaire”, and “Lonely Train”. This band that has toured with Def Leppard, Whitesnake, and Nickleback also played “Blame It on the Boom Boom”, from their latest album Between the Devil and The Deep Blue Sea.
Alter Bridge is led by three members of Creed – Mark Tremonti, Brian Marshall, and Scott Phillips – and though they were criticized early on for sounding too Creed-like, I think it’s safe to say they have more of a edge than Creed ever did. They played such tunes as “White Knuckles”, “Ties That Bind”, and “Blackbird”, which they dedicated to the victims of the Indiana State Fair grandstand tragedy. I should mention that each band took a minute from their set in some way to recognize those who were affected by the tragedy at the Indiana State Fair this year. It cannot be said that rockers don’t have heart!
Theory of a Deadman took the stage as headliners of the Carnival of Madness for its 2011 run. You can tell these guys are Canadian – they seem way too clean-cut to be rockers! They put on a fantastic show and closed out the night with a bang, entertaining the crowd with songs like “All or Nothing”, “Out of My Head”, and saved their hit “Bad Girlfriend” for the very last song of the evening. They also covered Eric Clapton’s “Cocaine”, definitely cool!
