Electric energy was oozing out of every old floorboard in The Vogue on the evening that Fitz and The Tantrums swept through Indianapolis with all the Motown-throwback force they could muster. This Los Angeles group is full of swagger, and the crowd responded in kind to their unique style and strikingly high-octane performance. Fitz and The Tantrums has all the polish of a group that has been together for years and years, though they just found each other in 2008, and started playing gigs a week after joining forces as a band.
Lead singer Michael Fitzpatrick (Fitz) has amazing stage presence, which he used to his advantage throughout the night – the crowd was repeatedly reduced to a bunch of screaming schoolgirls as he stepped to the edge of the stage and leaned over the packed floor during several songs. He and singer Noelle Scaggs have this almost palpable chemistry between them – whether real or staged, the way they seem to feed off of each other’s energy plays a huge part in the live experience.
Fitz and The Tantrums played what is probably their biggest hit in the Indianapolis market (thanks to airplay on WTTS), “Moneygrabber”, for the very end of their set. They worked a cover of the Eurythmics “Sweet Dreams” into the middle of the set, which was a perfect fit for their sound. They also made sure to cover their other top songs, including “Rich Girls”, “Breakin’ the Chains of Love”, and “Don’t Gotta Work it Out”. What a great night with a fantastic group of performers and that eclectic mix of pop/Motown/Indie Rock/Soul. Certainly a night Indy won’t soon forget.
