I never thought the day would come when I would feel compelled to compose this next sentence, yet here it is: That rail-thin, extraordinarily tall redhead sure has some shake in those hips. That would be Brett Dennen that I’m referring to. I admittedly had no preconceived notions of what to expect from Dennen as we entered the dimly lit realm known as The Vogue that Thursday night, but was shocked nonetheless.
Brett Dennen took the stage shoeless, just as if he was stepping into his own living room. This set the stage for the rest of the evening – it really felt like an evening hanging out with friends. Dennen has this cool, calm, and collected stage presence, and he sure isn’t shy about swinging those hips as he performs. The crowd certainly didn’t have a problem with that either, as Dennen played songs from his latest album, “Loverboy”, which you’d expect during a cd release tour. Some of the highlights from “Loverboy” were “Surprise, Surprise”, “Comeback Kid”, and “Dancing at a Funeral”.
Brett Dennen’s certainly one of the great modern songwriters. His lyrics are incredibly deep and insightful, and sometimes provide fans with an inside view of the way Dennen sees the world. His soft, almost timid voice belies the messages in his music. I love the way his sound gives his songs one meaning on the surface, but are so much more after you dig deeper into their true meaning.
Dawes opened up for Dennen, and I for one will be checking out more of their stuff. They have a great folk-rock sound, and appear to be a band with a great foundation that will only take off from here. I know there are a ton of you out there who don’t show up to concerts for the opening band, but you really should catch these up-and-coming acts. I think you’ll end up discovering some new favorites – and when they do make it big, you’ll have the “I saw them when…” bragging rights.
