How do you spot a band really lives up to all the hype? Well…they sell out their first show, and, after a second show is added the night before the original, they go ahead and sell that one out too. The Lumineers did this at Radio Radio at the end of May, where Indianapolis once again rose to the challenge of proving that we know good music when we hear it.
Whatever it is that draws people to bands like Mumford & Sons and The Avett Brothers, The Lumineers have it too. Having seen all three of these bands live now, the experience is one that manages to cocoon an intimate living room set, a sweaty bar show, and a performance in a cavernous theater together in a way that just, well, blows your mind. There’s no wall put up by the band to separate themselves from the audience, they simply are their most genuine, true selves. It’s a great experience when you can witness a band that truly interacts with and loves the crowd just as much as the people standing in that sweaty bar love them.
The Lumineers freshman full-length self-titled album that dropped in early April is, two months later, still in the Top 10 albums on iTunes. From the looks of it, most of the crowd has had that album on heavy rotation in their playlists since then – nearly everyone sang along to each and every song. “Ho Hey”, placed mid-set, anchored the performance for those less familiar with the band, since this song’s been played quite a bit on WTTS and is The Lumineers most widely recognized song from the album thus far. “Dead Sea”, “Big Parade”, and “Flowers in Your Hair” also made a big splash with the live crowd. This album isn’t likely to be knocked off of my “Favorites of 2012” list anytime soon.
