In a nutshell – Ra Ra Riot at The Earth House in Indy was an awesome night of high-energy indie rock. You could say it was rock-tacular. But that would just be cheesy. I’ll fully admit to being unfamiliar with Ra Ra Riot’s music before setting foot into that old church building, but I can proudly say I left as a fan.
If you’re one of those people who love live music for the whole experience, not just the music, this band is perfect for you. These guys are jumping and dancing around throughout most of the show…not in a headbanger way, but in a “we’re really into this” kinda way. Ra Ra Riot’s vocalist Wes Miles also spends his fair share of time on the keyboard. Cellist Alexandra Lawn plays this incredibly visually appealing version of an electric cello, that might be mistaken for a work of art. And you have to love an “indie rock” band that includes not only guitars and drums, but can also find room for a cello and violin.
The energy in the room coming from the crowd was also palpable – these are some devoted fans. This was Ra Ra Riot’s first show in Indy, and there were so many people in this eclectic all-ages crowd singing each and every word and having their very own dance parties in the front row. Grown men in business suits were just as into it as were the teenagers in skinny jeans with hipster haircuts. There were a couple of kids still in elementary school parked right in front of the speakers. You can’t deny that kind of loyalty and mass appeal. This band clearly has figured out the key to greatness, and it’ll only grow and mature with them if they keep up with this formula.
Not without mention, The Pomegranates opened up for Ra Ra Riot. While they are clearly newer and less polished, they have a lot of potential. The crowd seemed to get into their music, and they do have some catchy tunes. They sure rocked out – I’m certain they were more than one mother’s worst nightmare in high school! Great potential though – time will tell with these guys.
