We headed out on a cold winter evening to catch a show at the White Rabbit Cabaret located in Fountain Square. And, being the true professionals that we are...brought the camera but forgot the memory card. So the result is a couple of crappy iPhone shots...Oops!
We previously saw Indianapolis-based artist, Noah East, at the White Rabbit as an opening act for Jeremy Messersmith and really enjoyed his material. Upon first impressions, we would have characterized him as being in the same vein as perhaps Jason Mraz…little did we know that he would completely shatter that impression. Noah’s music is similar in that it is pop-driven with very well thought out words, but it is also folk/singer-songwriter in nature. Though we have only seen him play his music with a single acoustic or electric guitar, it is clear that his songs are based on the melodic styling’s of a very accomplished piano player.
Noah played a great set, including songs such as “Good One,” “Birds of Prey,” and my favorite of his, “Run.” If you haven’t had a chance to check out Noah’s music, catch him at a live show in the area sometime soon. He is one of those artists that you cheer for and want to see succeed because he writes and performs with an honesty that is hard to find. His lyrics will make you contemplate life in a manner that makes you appreciate the small interactions in life. He is quickly becoming my favorite local artist.
Next up, Cameron McGill took the stage. This was the first time we had ever seen Cameron’s show. McGill is originally from Chicago and is backed by his band What Army. Their last release from 2009, “Warm Songs for Cold Shoulders,” was well received. In April, the band will release a new project called “Is A Beast.” McGill played two sets, one solo and one accompanied by What Army. What made the biggest impression on us on this evening is how deep McGill’s lyrics are. He reminds me of Bob Dylan’s early years, giving us that look into a musician that is truly an artist expressing his life’s experiences. It is clear that he is a talented musician, but his lyrics are truly what will catch your attention. He played songs such as “If Darkness Would Rather Come,” “Love’s Worst Day,” “Not a Tourist,” and “That Los Angeles Mouth.” (Note: some of those titles may not be accurate, but reflect a particular lyric) In my opinion, he is the epitome of singer/songwriter music. His music is what I would listen to on a dark rainy day when I want to contemplate life and relationships. His work is deep, honest, and creative. Check him out on iTunes and if you feel the need, you can contribute to his work via Kickstarter. His latest tour dates are available on www.cameronmcgill.com.
